Last month, as the long, hot summer gradually dispelled into a cooler autumn, I popped over to see the open studio of the friend and artist who is 'The Shippen at Cantlop'. She's the organiser of the sketching days at Wildegoose Nursery, which I posted about a few months ago, in 'Round and Round the Garden', and she's also a landscape painter.
Her small but lovely garden studio was filled with artworks, many of them local scenes, interpreting the gentle rolling fields which surround this area.
I've been following her work for a while and it's been fascinating to see how her technique has developed. I was particularly taken with this loosely painted piece -
Every corner was hung with the light and colours of the changing seasons and it was of no surprise to see that many had already sold.
Mary also kindly provided very good coffee in dear little handmade mugs.
There were a few visitors there that morning and Mary shared her drawing portfolio with us, explaining her thoughts and working process.
Such a pleasant morning, enjoying good art and talking about it, then pottering round the garden to admire the views and the vast clouds rolling in from Wales and heading towards the East.
