Daisies and memories

When I was a little girl growing up in Devon, the seaside souvenir shops sold pretty ceramic door plaques painted with flowers and names on them, for children’s bedrooms. Needless to say, in Devon, in the 1970’s, ‘Gretel’ was not included, to my eternal disappointment. My mother must have mentioned this to a local pottery artist, as one day this kind woman presented me with my very own personalised egg cup. Naturally I was surprised and delighted - and only slightly disappointed that she had (as was often the case) spelt my name incorrectly. But it was a lovely gesture and I still have it over fifty years later and this rare photo of my mum and I together, all the more precious as I lost her just a few years after this was taken.

  1. The older I get my childhood seems almost to be another lifetime. I have a few treasures from that time and they are very important to me.

  3. deleted previous as duplicated! that's such a lovely story and a precious picture of you with your mum. I understand how your egg cup is special as it holds happy memories. I spent much of my childhood in Porlock which is now under the Devon border and you reminded me of the little shop in Porlock village in the early 60s that was a gift shop and you could also sit and have an ice cream, I lived with granny on Porlock hill and it was a Thursday treat to go there. In the shop granny bought me a little piskie ring, which sadly was taken years ago as was burgled, it had no value really, only to me. For many years I have searched without success for another little silver, oval piskie ring that had blue enamel, the moon and the piskie stuck on, I doubt I will ever find one but can't stop looking! 4. I can understand why your egg cup is so special. When I read your post, I immediately thought of the Toni Raymond pottery, which was in Torquay! It made door plaques with names on them and you can find some of these on eBay..and they are charming! 😁

  5. Isn't it amazing how little things like this bring back the most heartwarming memories?
