Dear Gretel, you feel happy, don't you? To see the pure joy your book is bringing to this girl! I feel pretty much the same when I'm acting in front of children or am among the public, during a performance of a puppet play, I've directed. Children's reactions are the best criteria for whether your art has reached them!!

See, this is the thing.
ReplyDeleteMost people create because they feel a certain compulsion to do so -- there's something inside them that needs to be set free through an act of creation. At that point, who knows or cares whether anyone else will like it?
But when something like this happens -- when you see what you've made and how it affects others, particularly if it does so positively -- that's a whole different experience. There's something very special that occurs when you see another person's eyes light up over something you've made. It's another kind of creative alchemy, the shared feeling of excitement that crops up between artist and audience.
Plus, d'aww! Little cutie!
