Skip Monkeys

So how did this...

...lead to this..

...and these...

...this...

...and even this?

Later. Having left the Hovel and it's various feline/vegetable inhabitants with a capable cottage-sitter, we are packing our bags and biking up to the Lake District for a few days jolly camping. So the web cam will be even more boring than watching me clean metal type with a toothbrush (what, you mean you missed that? Worthy of an Oscar). I promise not to return with any more - stuff. Apart from the odd drawing of cows. Really.

PS - If you cannot contain your curiosity, there is a full account of the Great Book Rescue here at Paula's Place

  1. Hello, what an amazing find, I just had a look on Paula's blog as well.
I told Toby and he was most upset that 'he never finds skips like this', well, I dont think many people do, what treasures you have found.
I am looking forward to your visit with us today on the way to camping.
    See you later!

  2. That's some SERIOUS Treasure Hunting!

Astonishing that any antique shop would toss out stuff that's plainly got a good deal of value. What fun...

Gosh... that studio upheaval looks totally intimidating. Makes me wonder if I'll ever be able to move...

Congrats on pulling it all off!

  4. Aarrghh!! I wanna go diving in that skip!! Those kiddies books are just stunning. Whimper, sniff, sniff...

I looked at Paula's site too...sniff, sniff. We never have anything half so interesting in this, my adopted country - the USA.

  5. I suspect we have our share of Enchanted Dumpsters here in the U.S., but this particular skip beats anything I've seen!

  6. heehee, I'll send some Fairy Skip Dust over your way! Sprinkle it in some dumpsters, leave for a day or so, and return to see what has appeared...

  7. We have three big dumpsters out the back of our condos. Not sure the Fairy Dust will help us per se, but the other residents often whisk away stuff WE chuck out. :-D

  8. What an amazing find that skip was, I would have dived in there like a bat out of hell. What reasures, never seen such an interesting skip. Well the weather is beautiful here in the far north of england [ Cumbria] blue skies and sunshine so you should get good weather in the Lake District.

  9. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!

How could anyone throw away such wonderful, wonderful things??!!!! I'm shocked. Shocked. Shocking, shocking. Shocked.

I'm so happy that such lovely and appreciative people like you and Paula came across it and rescued its contents before it was all landfilled. Lovely, lovely stuff.

I can't believe that someone was actually skipping stuff like that, a charity would probably have collected! Glad that you guys managed to rescue so much.
Have a wonderful trip, looking forward to seeing the pictures of cows when you come back.

Now that would be so much fun!!! Good for you that you were able to save those treasures.

Wanted to mention I just purchased your book Pinwheel Days in Missouri. Love it.

    Take care,

  13. We're back! I don't feel like such a bag lady after reading your comments, any sane person would have done the same!

Mrs G - I almost, almost picked up the Quills sign, but it was really grimy and wood rotted, and I am treading a very thin line with how much more 'stuff'I can smuggle into the house...

Connie, I'm pleased to hear Pinwheel is widely available over there'- it's not in the shops here as it's a US publication.
